who knows if the moon's a balloon, coming out of a keen city in the sky--filled with pretty people? (and if you and i should get into it,if they should take me and take you into their balloon, why then we'd go up higher with all the pretty people than houses and steeples and clouds: go sailing away and away sailing into a keen city which nobody's ever visited, where always ...

Oh man. This question is a really good one, but I’m not sure who I can relate to the most. Part of me thinks of Francie Nolan from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Betty Smith) first, but I’m not sure why. She and I don’t have a lot in common but I still really connect with her.
Similarly, I feel the same about Lyra from His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman). She and I don’t have...

The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
This book is amazing. I read it last year and JUST bought my copy a few days ago. I’m so excited to finally own this masterpiece and I wish more people would read it so we could talk about it. The sequel has been/ is being printed and will be released in March!!
Seriously. You should go read this book. Like right now. It’s so captivating...

Everything is Illuminated -Jonathon Safran Foer
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay - Michael Chabon ( I own this, I just need to read it!)

Day 22 - Favourite book you own
Right now it’s probably a tie between my copies of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange, and my copy of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
Slaughterhouse-Five and Breakfast of Champions are my favorite Vonnegut books. They are both marked up and dog eared and...

an extra lap around the block before home
midnightoil:
I will turn myself from the sidewalk leading up to my apartment building, consider the snowy sky, and decide I have ten more minutes for walking.
I will think of things that are deep and things that are petty and wonder if others do that in the same way.
I will decide that the truth scares me the most not because of the light it casts on others, but the fault lines it illuminates...

Day 21 - Favourite book from your childhood
The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear - Don Wood
The Monster At The End of This Book - Jon Stone
I loved these two books when I was little. I wanted to read them over and over and over. I still enjoy reading them today.
The other book that I consider a part of my childhood is The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien. My mother would read this book out loud to my sister and I at...

Day 20 - Favourite romance book
Oh man. This is a little tough for me.
My first reaction was The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. I realize that this book isn’t necessarily a romance novel… it certainly doesn’t get categorized in that genre. But to me, this book would be empty if the various relationships were removed. The romance between Lyra and Will, Lyra’s parents, Lee Scoresby’s fatherly...

Don’t say rape when you don’t mean rape.
There are many things rape is not:
consensual sex
affectionate contact
a bear hug
a tackle
eye contact
an argument
a surprise
overburdening
an athletic loss
a neutral metaphor
There are only a few things rape is:
forcing sex on a person
despoiling a population or place
[a mustard plant or grape residue]
No one rapes...

Day 19 - Favourite book turned into a movie
I’m not really sure about this question. Maybe I’m just tired. Is it asking which of my favourite books has been turned into a movie? Or which movie adaptation is the best? What if my favourite movie HASN’T been turned into a movie? And what if it has, but I didn’t like the movie?
I’m so confused. I’m also exhausted.
I think I’m going to go with the...

Day 18 - A book that disappointed you
The Time Traveler’s Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
This book had so much hype around it. When the movie came out, it was impossible to buy this book in any of the bookstores in town OR check it out from the library. I only got to this book because a friend bought it before seeing the movie, didn’t like the movie and therefore didn’t read the book, so she gave it to me. I read this...

Day 17 - Favourite quote from your favourite book
Being in love was like China: you knew it was there, and no doubt it was very interesting, and some people went there, but I never would. I’d spend all my life without ever going to China, but it wouldn’t matter, because there was all the rest of the world to visit. - Lyra in The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman

kavalierandclay replied to your post: Day 11 - A book you hated
I’m trying to read The Awakening right now, but maybe I shouldn’t bother.
Oh you should definitely give it a go. I just don’t find the ending to be that earth shattering, and quite frankly, it seems pretty obvious to me. I hate it when people try to get all philosophical about it because it is pretty straight forward IMO....

Day 14 - Favourite book of your favourite writer
Since my favorite books by JK Rowling, JRR Tolkien, Jennifer Roberson, and Virginia Woolf can already be found in a previous post in this 30 days list, I’m instead going to focus on the authors from yesterday’s post that I haven’t really discussed so far:
K.A. Applegate
Tennessee Williams
Patrick Rothfuss
